Message from a Loving Mother - Sophia was diagnosed with Scoliosis when she was 11 years old. Doctors instructed her to wear a brace every day to mitigate the curve. This was a challenge for Sophia and as a single mother the financial struggles kept growing. Watching Sophia go through these challenges of scoliosis has been incredibly difficult for me as her mother. Seeing her endure discomfort both physically and emotionally, breaks my heart. Scoliosis led her to lose her self-confidence and she was very shy and uncomfortable wearing her brace in public. When we were advised to get surgery (as this is the best option for her situation since her curve continued to get worse), I was worried and anxious for my daughter. Medical procedures in the Philippines are really expensive and I cannot afford her treatment. I joined a few groups on Facebook regarding scoliosis to get alternatives. This led me to know more about the SpineHope Charity. I submitted and applied for Sophia’s case and we were fortunate enough to be accepted. I hope surgery will bring her relief from the pain and discomfort she is experiencing. Sophia Castillo, was cleared and received corrective spine surgery for severe adolescent scoliosis on October 26, 2023. The operation was a success with no complications. Her spine surgeon, Dr. Matthew Geck of Texas Spine and Scoliosis, performed her charity surgery at Ascension Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas in Austin. Sophia dreams of becoming a nurse. She believes her spine surgery experience and quality care received will give her a unique perspective. She recognizes how important compassion is to becoming an exceptional healthcare professional. Sophia is back in the Philippines and will be forever grateful for everyone’s support, her incredible medical team, and for this life-changing opportunity
