Ethiopia Global Outreach Program

downloadPartnering with Myungsung Christian Medical Center (MCM), located in the eastern part of Ethiopia’s capital city Addis Ababa, we hope to launch a new global outreach program in January 2017.  Ethiopia remains one of the world’s least developed countries and its children suffer from an incredibly high number of spinal deformities and other complex spine conditions. Unfortunately, treatment for these conditions is expensive and Ethiopia neither has the resources nor the specialized medical professionals to provide adequate care. There is a list of well over 500 children in need of spine surgery…and that list continues to grow. The only assistance provided has come from outside groups and surgeons willing to volunteer their time and resources.

13244735_1109840992408773_7962037346344546418_nWe are happy to further support these efforts and are grateful to have the opportunity to help this nation and children in such need. Currently, we are in the process of forming a team with the goal of performing spine surgery on 8-12 children and seeing several more in clinic during our initial 1.5 week long medical mission trip in 2017. Specific dates TBD. We are grateful for our partners, supporters and volunteers who will be participating in this upcoming mission, including:

  • Brandon Black, Equipment & Implant Representative, from Medtronic, Inc.
  • Mae Caime, Executive Director of Long Island Spine Specialists, P.C.
  • Diane Curley, Director of Clinical Resources at Catholic Health Services
  • Matthew Geck, MD, Trip Leader & Surgeon from Seton Spine and Scoliosis Center
  • Rick Hodes, Physician and Medical Director of Ethiopia for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC)
  • Curtis Jackson, Equipment & Implant Representative, from Medtronic, Inc.
  • Laurence Mermelstein, Orthopedic Surgeon at Long Island Spine Specialists, P.C.
  • Justin Silverstein, MD, Neuromonitoring, from Neuro Protective Solutions
  • Kris Stillwell, PA at Long Island Spine Specialists, P.C.

Our hope is13244611_1109841012408771_2231643655384727032_n to build a long term and sustainable global outreach program in Ethiopia. In addition to providing surgical care to the children, our team will also provide education and advanced training to local medical staff. We look forward to this live-changing collaboration.13239181_1109840999075439_3569515687663344678_n
